Play and Playfulness: Science, Neuroscience, Clinical Applications

DESCRIPTION

In this course, we will integrate and apply the constructs of play and playfulness with the science and neural underpinnings. We will briefly address assessment tools and principles of intervention. Video examples and learning labs will accompany the theory shared.

After taking this course, participants will be able to:
  1. Define play and playfulness and their relationship
  2. Describe the science and neural correlates underlying play and playfulness
  3. Be familiar with tools for assessing play and the context of play
  4. Understand neural, behavioural, and contextual attributes that support successful play and how to promote those in intervention with special emphasis on children with ADHD and autistic children.

SPEAKERS

Anita C Bundy, ScD, OT/L, FAOTA, FOTARA

Anita Bundy is Professor and Department Head in Occupational Therapy at Colorado State University; she has an honorary appointment at the University of Sydney in Australia where she worked full time for 13 years. Anita has been a practitioner, educator and researcher in the area of sensory integration. Together with colleague, Dr. Shelly Lane, she edited two editions of the textbook, Sensory Integration: Theory & Practice published by F. A. Davis..

Shelly J Lane, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA

Shelly Lane is the Academic Program Director at Colorado State University (CSU) and a Conjoint Professor of Occupational Therapy at the University of Newcastle, Australia. She holds a BS in Occupational Therapy and a PhD in Anatomy and Neuroscience (1984). Her research has focused broadly on neuroscience applications in occupational therapy, aspects of childhood occupations, and sensory integration/processing in children. Dr. Lane presents nationally and internationally on topics related to childhood occupations and neuroscience. She has published extensively, edited chapters and texts, and authored/co-authored book chapters addressing issues related to sensory integration and processing, neuroscience applications to practice, and pediatric occupational therapy practice.
